Sekitar 23 persen bakau di dunia tumbuh di Indonesia. Bakau ini melindungi pantai dari abrasi, banjir dan tsunami. Namun sejak 1980-an, menurut Organisasi Pangan dan Pertanian PBB (FAO), sekitar 40 persen hutan bakau tersebut telah rusak dan perusakan itu berkontribusi terhadap pemanasan global.
